  • The Los Angeles Basin Initiative (LABI) offers a wide range of summer/intersession academic enrichment and professional development programs to high school and middle school students, teachers, and counselors from Los Angeles County.

  • Teacher intern programs through University Extension at the Berkeley and UCLA campuses provide opportunities to teach on an emergency credential while completing a credential program.

Community collaboration

  • Two Community Education Research Centers (CERCs) make UC resources more accessible to local communities and serve as a locus for collaboration. They are located in the San Francisco Bay area (through UC Berkeley, 510/987-9354) and in the Los Angeles Basin (through UCLA, 310/206-4353).

Urban education

  • Center X at UCLA works to strengthen education for the children of Los Angeles by conducting applied research and providing professional development.

  • The Urban Education Studies Center (UESC) at UCLA provides a unique setting where nationally recognized scholars and researchers collaborate with teachers and administrators to resolve cultural, economic, and language challenges facing America's public schools.
  • The Center for the Study of Urban Poverty (CSUP) at UCLA sponsors collaborative research on issues of urban poverty and social welfare, disseminates study results to local policy makers, and offers research training for UC students.

Testing, assessment and evaluation

Health and well-being of children and families

  • The Center for Healthier Children, Families and Communities (CHCFC) at UCLA works to provide K-12 students with the opportunity to assume productive roles within families and communities; conducts applied and policy research; trains health and social service providers; and provides technical assistance to community providers, agencies and policymakers.
  • The Center for Mental Health in Schools at UCLA conducts research and dissemenates information on policies, programs, and practices relevant to mental health in schools.
